Actually, in case for those who don’t read novel, and in case it was skipped in this chapter. Paula doesn’t like much the violence here with Ethan vs Vincent, because it reminds her father’s violent actions. She’s terrified when they both we’re punching and all. But this is just small details.
Every week i rediscover I’m not as patient as i thought i was cause where is the rest of the chapter!!
Unpopular opinion… I get VincentxPaula are endgame, but I can\’t help thinking Ethan is a better, healthier choice for Paula, if she had to end up between the characters.
It\’s not really an unpopular opinion tbh…I think a lot of readers like the idea (myself included). The problem is that the romantic attraction isn\’t there–Paula would probably gag at the thought, lmao. The same reason Lucas/Paula would not have worked (and he knew it, too).
The story would also need to change dramatically. Vincent & Ethan would definitely not remain friends, which is what Ethan wants the most. Ethan is bad at taking his own advice, so while he seems like a great choice on the surface, there\’s a lot more going on underneath. He has his own unique set of problems and even up to this point, he is still holding back.
He doesn\’t trust anyone enough to open up all the way, and I feel he would continue like this if they did end up together. He is definitely not in the correct headspace for a relationship. Paula isn\’t, either. Only one person (Vincent) is ready & it\’s b/c he knows what he wants and he\’s spent 5yrs chasing it.
Looking at this chapter alone…Ethan very elegantly controls the room. Vincent maintains decorum, but doesn\’t pander to anyone. His concern is focused on Paula. Other ppl don\’t even exist. 😂 Ethan is concerned for Paula, but also needs to maintain his image & not play all his cards.
Vincent\’s fixation isn\’t healthy, but it\’s also why I think Vincent/Paula actually works. Ethan & Paula are both somewhat cold/unemotional decision makers while Vincent passionately does whatever he wants. He does not operate like a normal noble and is such a weird emotional trash panda b/c he most likely had to raise himself after his parents died while also fighting off adults that wanted to take advantage of him. He\’s no doubt a weirdo, but he is 1000% ride or die for Paula.
After a lifetime of being beaten down and denigrated, I think only Vincent\’s selfish tenacity 😅 can break down Paula\’s walls and eventually make her see that she isn\’t worthless or undeserving. She tries to run from him and he refuses to accept it.
Ethan would have to pursue Paula with the same level of enthusiasm which I don\’t think he would do. He\’s still very much a noble and operates within those rules.
